“The winds blow strongest against those who stand tallest”

“Pray as if everything depends on God. Work as if everything depends on you.”

“Don’t place your mistakes on ur head, their weight may crush U. Instead place them under your feet and use them as a platform 2 view your horizon.”

“Don’t be afraid to take a big step when required; you can’t cross a chasm in two small steps.”

“If people around you are trying to pull you down be PROUD about it ! It only means one thing.. You are above them !”

The bounce and verve of the morning should remain with one throughout. Pity it fades away as you approach noon. So i try to pack in as much as one possibly can. Today a little more since the shoot timing changed to late evening. Why ? Its cooler when the sun goes down. The air conditioning at Kitab Mahal would be more effective. Rubbish !! There was no difference.

So there were important meetings in the morning. Plannings for the travel due in the not too distant future. Hong Kong, the Bill Clinton Global Initiative. He called again to request to come. Balki, the director of ‘Cheeni Kum’ wants me to travel to London for some presentations for his ‘Pa’ and a large fragrance company from France and US came in with a large team to discuss the perfume being designed for my endorsement. This will be the second time around.

Back then to yesterday’s location. And i was so right. No Ajay Devgan today, no crowds !! A quick in and out, some one shot takes and under the shower in the van to make over for a wedding reception to be attended to. Grand Hyatt, expansive and artistic and the wedding reception minus the bridegroom !! He was on the way and had not arrived. My blessings and presence acknowledged I rush out of the Hotel to be caught just outside with the ‘baraat’ that was coming in. The decorated horse, the veiled bridegroom, the ‘indu jea’ band dressed in their fineries, the ‘baratis’ in turbans dancing to the latest hits from film, emanating jarringly through massive brass horns. Friends relatives dressed in their shervani and brocaded saries and dripping jewelry, moving frantically to the rhythm, between minnows carrying chandelier lamps, heavy as hell. Peals and screams of excitement as female gold danglings collide with fiercely moving bhangra males.

We drive past after being held up by efficient self appointed traffic regulators. Cars to the left, baraat to… three quarters of the road. As I slide by the mass of celebration i glance on the opposite corner of the road. A sizable number of humanity has gathered there as well. They are not with the wedding party. They have come to watch this concert. They are not easily noticeable. They are parked in the darker corner of the street. Such humanity generally is in the dark mostly.

They are the poor living in abject poverty in nearby shanties. Torn shirts, bare bodied, sweaty exhausted eyes without a cheer. They stare with singular expression and daze, quiet without moving. Just standing there motionless.

What goes in their minds. Will they ever get to be a part of this opulent celebration. Ride the horse, dance with elation and expensive clothing and move into the ballroom area of the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Perhaps not. Mostly perhaps not. For them today it is a delight to be able to witness some other in happy circumstance. That is their joy and excitement for the day. To have just got an opportunity to see from close quarters this wedding procession. When they shall retire to the harsh floor of their tarpaulin roofed make shift home, they shall talk excitedly of the event. But that is all they shall do. Just talk about it and dream…

Harsh.. real.. and terribly disturbing..

Ok.. apologies for missing out on yesterday. But here I am today filling in for the 20th.

Several activities happened that prevented me from doing what I was supposed to do !

The shoot for ‘Teen Patti’ was at Kitab Mahal at Flora Fountain on the fourth floor, once supposed to be a library and chosen because reference in the scene needed an artistic background. Bad decision !!

There was no art gallery, no paintings, it was the hottest day in Mumbai, there was no air conditioning, the facility had a tin roof adding to the extent of the heat and the coolers were cooling everything else but what they were supposed to cool. So..

Temperature inside the set, which just by the way had about a hundred people in 50 square feet of space, was, yes… a hundred degrees. Once up on the fourth floor there was no way you could get to the comfort of the vanity van, simply because vanity vans are parked on the road and we have not yet devised technology to get them up to the fourth floor of a building !!

The scene, another irony, was a setting for a high end party. Elegant looking guests, ladies in modern couture, gents in tuxedo, yours truly in tux and silk scarf and wig. No ventilation. All doors and windows shut and covered in black cloth to prevent light from coming in because…. its a night scene. In keeping with the authenticity that the director wanted a great many genuine high end social celebrities invited on set to play small walk on talk on parts. They, may god bless their enthusiasm, came fully prepared with dialogue and brief on character, not aware that there are retakes, for lighting and focus and camera and sound deficiencies at often times, causing them to repeat lines and stay in mood for several hours, despite their now dripping with sweat countenance !!

So… we have the first heart warming reaction from them within minutes of the start.

“You know Mr Bachchan, suddenly we have all developed a very healthy respect for you and your profession. We never knew you had to go through all this in making a film !!

Thank you dear lady. And may you please spread the word around to others of your ilk.

The crowds below are swelling. The police has been informed to bring order. Its a hundred meter walk from the ground door to the van. Its a gauntlet. The masses explode and cheer and applaud. I feel elated and swell my chest. Hey ! At 67, not bad to still demand such recognition. Its then that I notice another fancy vanity van. Its Ajay Devgan’s. Yes of course. He is playing a days’ guest appearance today. Damn !! And I thought the crowds were for me. Sad. But happy for Ajay.

We all live within feet of each other. Ajay and Kajol now 10′ away from my boundary wall in Jalsa. Opposite him, 6′ away, Dharamji, Sunny and Bobby. They sharing common boundary wall with Yash Chopra, Adi Chopra and we never see or meet each other !! Ajay called on phone after about 8 months when we were in the same hotel in London. I was presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award to Dharamji at IIFA, in Yorkshire, England, where I met him after years !! Ha..Ha..

But I know and they know that any time they need me or I them, we will be the first to come together !!

The drive back home was a trip to New Delhi and back by air . Two and a half hours to get to Juhu and Jalsa from Flora Fountain. But… the car now a multipurpose vehicle. Office paper work, computer connection through USB card, pillows for a quick nap. Problem area… toilets !! More on this later, please !!

A quick cold, yes cold shower and then to wish Aishwarya’s father. His 70th. Fighting cancer bravely and looking good. A quiet family meet at ‘PURE’ in Taj Lands End. New and neatly decorated. Good food served with some elegance. I refrain. I am the ‘dal’ ‘roti’ misfit at these venues. The names of these dishes unpronounceable, unless your French and Italian is good. The purpose of going to an outfit such as this is to eat, not to feel embarrassed and self conscious in telling them what you want to eat !! Er.. just some plain bread and butter would be fine, thank you. No, no the menu is brilliant, just feeling a little under the weather. Got to watch my weight too. Media thinks I look like a stuffed pumpkin. No, I know you have that on the menu as well, but no thank you I will not be ordering much else. And oh… la addition, sil vous..whatever !! Ya, the bill.

Aishwarya, just in for a day from the wilds of Kerala and Mani Ratnam and back there via Bengaluru tomorrow early morning. Missing them. Wish they would shoot in Mumbai.

Alrighty….

Got to start preparing for 100 degrees again. So see ya !!

Love and more as always,

Amitabh Bachchan

You remember I had put up an article from the Outlook on a foreign journalists impression on the conditions in our country. There had been substantial comment on it in the blog.

Well, the magazine too received several comments on the topic. Normally an article of this nature would never invite such reaction. In fact it is often barely noticed. But the letters to the editor has been flooded it seems with this particular issue.

I give below the pages from the Outlook on the comments from readers on said article… interesting !

A restful day. A surprise cancellation of the shoot. Never know how to handle these special unannounced holidays. You want to do so many things at the same time. And never succeed in doing even one with complete satisfaction.

But interesting meetings took place with Balki for ‘Pa’ and with RGV for ‘Rann’. Unfortunately I cannot say anything about them, but suffice to say they seem to be important strong different and challenging. There was also Firoze Nadiadwala and Prakash Jha and Anjum Rajabali for another topical yet pertinent issue of a film that I had approved.

I have but this to say. The coming years in the Indian Film Industry will present films of immensely strong and varied nature. Technical superiority, content of substance and a quality that will surprise not just the local audience, but those that inhabit a different land. And it shall come from a generation who will have an average age of 25.

In closing therefore, my customary attempt at some words of wisdom.. not mine.. but sms’d to me on mobile. And one more important thing. Those words of yesterday are not poetry, they just spilled out without any thought or purpose, randomly.

“Our character’s what we do when we think no one’s looking”

May we all live in peace and harmony.. and of course my love..
